Personal, Practical Righteousness

-August 9, 2023-

Good morning, happy Wednesday,

“For the Lord is righteous, He loves righteousness; His countenance beholds the upright.”

(Psalm 11:7).

The subject of righteousness is found throughout the Word of God. God is perfectly righteous in His character and in all His ways. We are declared righteous through Christ positionally, and we must practice righteousness in our daily lives. Righteousness is very simply is doing what is right before God and men.

A number of years ago, someone coined the acronym “WWJD, standing for “What Would Jesus Do?” We make choices and decisions everyday that reflect upon the Lord Jesus Christ. Some things are definitely right, others are questionable, and still others are definitely wrong. If it is wrong, doubtful or questionable, we shouldn’t do it. Many Christians ask the question: “Is it wrong?” The real question is: “Is it right and does it bring glory to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

My teacher Bill MacDonald once wrote, “The Lord Himself is righteous and loves to see His people acting in a righteous manner. He is pleased when believers instinctively make choices that are consistent with divine and moral law. But it is not always easy in a world such as ours. We are constantly tempted to compromise in the areas of morals and ethics. Some of the temptations are blatant; others are insidious. It takes both discernment and backbone to walk a straight line.”

The straight line in the Bible is called the narrow road, the highway of holiness, and the way of truth. The Holy Spirit will use the Word of God to instruct us, convict us, and show what is right and wrong in God’s eyes. Here are few examples of what to guard against: cheating in any form, such as falsifying resumes, job applications, tax returns, or insurance claims; giving or receiving bribes or kickbacks; lying, exaggerating, or hiding the truth; supporting those who are wrong or not supporting those who are right; spending time on the internet while at work on personal matters; taking things from work for personal use. There are many others we can come up with as well.

Do you love righteousness? It will show in our personal, private, and ways of life. The Lord sees and hears everything we think, say, and do. Not only that, but others around us are watching us at home, school, work, in our neighborhood, or wherever we go. Let’s make the right choices and decisions to live lives pleasing to God, putting Him first, and doing what is right.

Have a blessed day practicing righteousness. Stay safe and healthy.

Doing right in God’s sight, every day and every night,

Dean
