Good morning, happy Friday,
“The Lord’s portion is His people; Jacob is the place of His inheritance.”
(Deuteronomy 32:9).
Yesterday we considered that the Lord is our portion. He is our everything, our all. Today, we look at the fact that we as His people are His portion. These two are like a two-sided coin reflecting our relationship with the Lord. He loves us so much and we mean everything to Him. The Lord Jesus Christ died on the cross to save us and redeem us to Himself. We are His blood bought people.
Under the OT law, all the first born Israelites belonged to the Lord, along with all the first born animals. The Lord required a redemption price for each person. Numbers 18:15-16 says, “Everything that first opens the womb of all flesh, which they bring to the Lord, whether man or beast, shall be yours; nevertheless the firstborn of man you shall surely redeem, and the firstborn of unclean animals you shall redeem. And those who redeemed of the devoted things you shall redeem when one month old, according to your valuation, for five shekels of silver, according the shekel of the sanctuary, which is twenty gerahs.” The rich did not pay any more, nor did the poor pay any less. This ceremony was carried out on the 31st day after birth and was based on how God slew all the firstborn Egyptians before Pharaoh let the Israelites go free.
Israel was and is the Lord’s earthly people and He considered them His special treasure. He chose them not because of how numerous or strong they were, nor how good they were. Jesus considers us His heavenly people. In Exodus 19:5 it says, “Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine.”
In 1 Peter 2:9-10, Peter wrote of us, “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.” It is all by the riches of God’s mercy and grace. We did not nor will we ever deserve it!
We are His portion; we belong to the Lord by the redemption of His precious blood. Truly our lives are not our own. We live to please and serve the Lord. What a wonderful position we have in Christ. We are His portion and the Lord is our portion. We are so blessed above all the rest! One day the Lord will take us to heaven to live with Him forever. Hallelujah!
Have a blessed day thanking the Lord for making us His portion both now and forever. Stay safe and healthy.
