Jesus The Great Physician Heals-
“Now He arose from the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. But Simon’s wife’s mother was sick with a high fever; and they made request of Him concerning her. So He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. Immediately she arose and served them.”
(Luke 4:38-39).
Jesus is the Great Physician. He alone can heal where medical science fails. The account of the healing of Peter’s mother-in-law is also found in Matthew 8:14-15 and Mark 1:30-31. It is always good to read all the accounts to gain insight into this wonderful miracle of healing. Each writer writes from his own perspective and is a blessing.
Luke was a medical doctor and gives the most details of the three accounts. In his gospel he speaks of Jesus as the Son of Man. Our Savior had so much compassion, empathy, sympathy, and love toward everyone, especially His disciples. He was never too busy to help and heal people. Just prior to this event, Jesus and His disciples had been the synagogue in the service of His Heavenly Father.
The disciples made request of Jesus on behalf of this dear lady who was very ill. Luke is the one who tells us she sick just with a fever but with a high fever. The situation was extremely serious, definitely life threatening. We don’t know how long she had been ill. The best thing we can do for someone ill or in any other need is to pray.
The Coronavirus has several symptoms, one of which is a fever, usually a high one, that lasts for quite a while. It is one thing to read about or see on TV someone who has the virus and it devastating effects. The ones with more serious symptoms land in the hospital and in some cases in the ICU. Some recover but others die. It is totally different if you know someone who in this situation. It brings it much closer to home.
One of the members of our church is in such a situation. He contracted the Coronavirus from a neighbor who had it and didn’t know it, and got too close to our brother. Now, not only is our brother very sick but his wife is sick also. We are very concerned and our hearts go out to them and we are all praying earnestly and fervently for their full recovery. Our brother has underlying health issues.
In the case of Peter’s mother-in-law, Jesus stood over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her. Mark adds the detail that Jesus touched her hand and lifted her up. It was a beautiful touch of the Master’s hand. She arose and served them. She didn’t get gradually better, she was immediately healed. What a great miracle! She had more service to perform, Her ministry on earth was not over yet.
Please join in prayer for both our brother, his wife, and all his family. The brother is a father and a grandfather. We pray God will heal him and raise him up. If he has more to do for the Lord, the Lord will restore Him. Only God knows what His will is in this matter. Our brother and his wife are both great servants of the Lord.
May the Lord help to pray believing, to pray continually, to pray fervently, and to pray according to God’s will. Mary and Martha sent word to Jesus on behalf of their brother Lazarus, saying, “…Lord, behold he whom You love is sick” (John 11:3). Jesus said in John 11:4, “…this sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”
Have a blessed day remembering that Jesus that heals. There is no situation that cannot be handled by the Great Physician. Stay safe and healthy.
